Overview

Ziehm Vision RFD 3D: Mobile 3D C-Arm with CT-Like Imaging

Authorized Ziehm Imaging 3D C-arm equipment supplier. The Ziehm Vision RFD 3D is a mobile 3D C-arm that delivers CT-like reconstructions directly in the operating room. With an installed base of almost 1,000 systems, it was the first mobile 3D C-arm to use a flat-panel detector. By pulling the postoperative CT scan forward into the OR, it reduces the need for follow-up imaging and costly revision surgeries while improving surgical precision and patient outcomes.

Core 3D imaging technology: a 31cm x 31cm CMOS flat-panel detector delivering higher spatial resolution, lower noise, and faster read-out than conventional C-arms, paired with patented SmartScan technology that produces 180 degrees of scanned information for a complete cone beam 3D dataset. A powerful 25 kW pulsed monoblock generator with Advanced Active Cooling supports continuous use, while Ziehm Iterative Reconstruction (ZIR) minimizes metal artifacts. The Ziehm NaviPort interface connects to navigation and robotic guidance systems, making the RFD 3D a complete intraoperative cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and imaging platform for orthopedic, trauma, spinal, maxillofacial, and cochlear procedures.

Key Features

CMOS 3D Imaging, SmartScan & NaviPort

Three core technologies separate the Ziehm Vision RFD 3D from a conventional mobile C-arm and from fixed CBCT systems. Each was engineered to bring CT-like 3D imaging and surgical navigation into the OR on a mobile platform, delivering cone beam CT detail without a dedicated CBCT scanner. Full technical detail is in the expandable sections below.

CMOS Flat-Panel Detector: 31cm x 31cm CMOS detector delivering higher spatial resolution through smaller pixel sizes, lower noise levels, and higher read-out speed at full resolution compared with conventional C-arms
True Resolution: High resolution in magnification modes makes interpolation unnecessary, improving overall imaging efficiency
Patented SmartScan: Generates 180 degrees of scanned information through an intelligent combination of linear and rotating movements (linear 7.5 degrees, rotating 165 degrees, linear 7.5 degrees) for a complete cone beam CT style 3D dataset while retaining conventional 2D C-arm geometry
Variable Isocenter: A variable isocenter combined with a generous C-arm opening provides flexible positioning during the scan
Volume Sizes: Standard 16cm x 16cm x 16cm (0.312mm slice), larger field of view 19.8cm x 19.6cm x 18.0cm (0.387mm slice) for pelvis surgery, and a 10cm x 10cm x 10cm zoom-in or cochlea package (0.195mm slice)
Voxel Resolution: Choice of 320 or 512 voxel volumes for higher resolution without increasing dose

Ziehm Iterative Reconstruction (ZIR): A specially developed algorithm that minimizes fan and metal artifacts in 3D reconstructions, producing more distinguishable anatomy, defined bone crests, and optimum slice views in coronal, axial, sagittal, and individually adjustable planes
Ziehm NaviPort: Connects the mobile 3D C-arm to navigation and robotic guidance systems from leading providers including Brainlab, Stryker, Scopis, Globus Medical, and Zimmer Biomet. The 3D dataset transfers seamlessly and aligns automatically with the patient anatomy, eliminating manual registration
Enhanced Screw Visualization: Color-coding of screws on all axes and in volume rendering for intuitive screw evaluation in orthopedic procedures
Enhanced Vessel Visualization: Color differentiation of vessels for clearer interpretation
Anatomical Marking Tool (AMT): Apply markings and labels directly on fluoroscopic images, now enhanced with color, including aneurysm and side-branch marking for aortic stent graft implantation
SmartVascular Package: DSA, MSA, and RSA roadmapping for hybrid and interventional applications

Image-Guided Surgery That Replaces the Postoperative CT Scan

By bringing CT-like 3D imaging into the OR, the Ziehm Vision RFD 3D lets surgeons assess their work intraoperatively rather than waiting for a postoperative CT scan and risking a return to surgery. Fine details such as cortical rims, pedicle diameters, and the orbital floor are clearly visualized. Combined with NaviPort navigation and robot-assisted guidance, this fusion of cone beam 3D imaging and image-guided capability supports less invasive approaches, reduces revision surgeries, and increases decision-making confidence in the OR.

Workflow

Scan Workflow, Navigation & OR Integration

A complete intraoperative imaging platform engineered to standardize the OR workflow across many users with wizard-guided scanning and seamless navigation integration. The Position Control Center, Ziehm NaviPort, and Ziehm Usability Concept keep the 3D C-arm workflow fast and repeatable. Expanded details are in the expandable sections below.

Workflow wizards assist in setting up the scan and guiding the operator to the right anatomical program with ideal dose settings. After positioning the 3D C-arm and performing a collision check in approximately 2 minutes, the system is ready to scan. SmartScan captures 180 degrees of information in 48 seconds, and iterative reconstruction creates crystal-clear images in 8 seconds for a standard volume or 18 seconds at 512 voxel. A complete 3D scan takes less than three minutes end to end.

The Ziehm NaviPort interface connects the RFD 3D to navigation and robotic guidance systems from Brainlab, Stryker, Scopis, Globus Medical, and Zimmer Biomet. The high-resolution 3D dataset transfers seamlessly and aligns automatically with the patient anatomy, eliminating the need to register the 3D record. The navigation system then guides the surgeon in real time, while robot-assisted surgery positions instruments according to a pre-defined plan.

Thanks to motorization of all 4 axes combined with the Position Control Center or the Remote Vision Center, the surgeon can move the C-arm into the exact position desired entirely from the sterile field. The operator can save and recall up to 3 positions, for example switching between AP, lateral, and oblique positions to save time and increase precision. Distance Control provides non-contact collision protection for patient safety.

The Ziehm Usability Concept combines finely tuned hardware with seamlessly integrated software. Color-coded scales and handles ensure clear communication, the wireless dual-plus footswitch controls imaging functions without cables, and Ziehm NetPort with WLAN enables easy integration into IT networks. Wireless video transmits live X-ray images to external monitors, and versatile viewing options offer maximum flexibility in the OR.

The Ziehm Vision RFD 3D is a mobile 3D C-arm that delivers CT-like reconstructions while being significantly smaller than a fixed C-arm and approximately 60% lighter than mobile CT scanners. It provides cone beam CT style 3D datasets intraoperatively without the footprint, weight, or cost of a dedicated mobile computed tomography machine, and it retains full 2D fluoroscopy capability that a mobile CT scan cannot offer.

Like an O arm, the Ziehm Vision RFD 3D provides intraoperative 3D imaging and navigation integration, but it retains the open geometry, compact 0.8 square meter footprint, and 2D fluoroscopy capability of a conventional mobile C-arm. When clinicians compare a c arm vs o arm for their OR, the variable isocenter and generous C-arm opening offer easier patient access than a closed-gantry o arm machine, and the system weighs far less.

SmartScan is Ziehm Imaging’s patented technology that enables 180 degrees of scanned information through an intelligent combination of linear and rotating movements, specifically linear 7.5 degrees, rotating 165 degrees, and linear 7.5 degrees. It generates a complete cone beam 3D dataset while keeping the geometry of a conventional 2D C-arm.

ZIR (Ziehm Iterative Reconstruction) is a specially developed algorithm that minimizes fan and metal artifacts in 3D reconstructions, producing more distinguishable anatomy, defined bone crests, and optimum slice views in coronal, axial, sagittal, and individually adjustable planes.

Yes. The Ziehm NaviPort interface connects the RFD 3D to navigation and robotic guidance systems from leading providers including Brainlab, Stryker, Scopis, Globus Medical, and Zimmer Biomet. The 3D dataset transfers and aligns automatically with the patient anatomy, eliminating manual registration, and the navigation system guides the surgeon in real time.
