How to choose a C-arm
Four questions settle most C-arm purchases before a model is discussed.
- What is on the case list? Hand, wrist, foot and ankle work points to a mini C-arm. Orthopedics, trauma, spine, pain management and urology need a full-size mobile system. Vascular and bariatric cases need the higher-power generators, and spine programs that check implants during surgery need 3D.
- How big is the room? Compact all-in-one systems such as the Ziehm Solo FD and Fujifilm Persona CS fit rooms a full-size C-arm with a separate workstation cannot.
- Image intensifier or flat panel? A flat panel gives a rectangular, distortion-free image at a lower dose and holds its value longer; a healthy image intensifier is the lower-cost entry. The section below explains the difference.
- New, refurbished, used or rented? New for the newest software and the longest support life, certified refurbished for the same image quality at 40 to 60 percent below new, as-is used for the lowest entry cost with your own service, and rental for a need with an end date.
Send us the procedure list and the room and we will tell you which of the systems below fits and which would be overkill. What each type costs, what moves the price and what a quote includes are in the C-arm machine cost guide; the terms are untangled in C-arm versus fluoroscopy.
Mini, full-size or 3D: which C-arm you need
Mini and extremity C-arms
The Orthoscan TAU family images hands, wrists, feet, ankles and elbows with a small flat panel, from the 15 x 12 cm TAU 1512 through the 15 x 15 cm TAU 1515 to the 20 x 20 cm TAU 2020, at a fraction of the dose and footprint of a full-size system. The TAU family is the first mini C-arm line designed and approved for pediatric patients. A mini cannot cover spine, hip or vascular cases.
Full-size mobile C-arms
The operating-room workhorse. Compact all-in-one units, the Ziehm Solo FD with its 21 cm CMOS flat panel and 2.4 kW generator and the Fujifilm Persona CS at 5 kW, suit small rooms, pain management and orthopedics. The Ziehm Vision FD and Vision RFD (30 x 30 cm flat panel, 25 kW) and the Fujifilm Persona C (21 x 21 or 30 x 30 cm flat panel) cover general surgery, trauma, spine and vascular access. GE OEC 9800 and 9900 Elite, Siemens Cios and Arcadis and Philips systems are sourced refurbished or used.
3D C-arms
The Ziehm Vision RFD 3D reconstructs a CT-like volume in the operating room for spine, trauma and implant checks, on a 30 x 30 cm flat panel with a 25 kW generator. It was the first mobile 3D C-arm with a flat-panel detector.
Hybrid systems
The Fujifilm FDR Cross combines a mobile C-arm and a portable X-ray in one battery-powered unit for surgery centers and orthopedic practices that need both without two machines.
Image intensifier or flat panel, and what the generator rating means
Image intensifier systems convert X-rays to light in a vacuum tube and then to a video signal; they remain a reliable, lower-cost choice for general procedures. Flat-panel detector systems, usually CMOS, produce a rectangular image with no geometric distortion, a wider dynamic range and generally a lower dose, and every new system we sell is flat panel. The generator rating, in kilowatts, decides how thick a patient and how long a case the system handles: 2.4 kW monoblocks serve pain management and orthopedics, 15 to 25 kW rotating-anode systems serve vascular, bariatric and long cases.
New, refurbished or used C-arm?
New brings current detector technology, the newest software and the manufacturer warranty. As an authorized Ziehm, Orthoscan and Fujifilm dealer we quote new systems with delivery, installation and training included. Refurbished systems from Medical Outfitters are inspected and tested to specification, with the tube, generator and detector verified for image quality before delivery, and typically cost 40 to 60 percent less than new. Used equipment is sold as inspected and described, for buyers who want the lowest entry cost and have their own service arrangement.
Condition tiers at a glance
| Tier | What is done before delivery | Warranty | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| New | Current Ziehm, Orthoscan or Fujifilm system built to order, with current detector technology, the newest software and the manufacturer warranty | Manufacturer warranty, with service contract options | Sites planning a decade of use or needing the latest software and 3D |
| Certified refurbished | Pre-owned system inspected and tested to specification, X-ray tube, generator and detector verified for image quality, delivered and installed by our own crews | Written warranty | Most surgery centers, pain practices and orthopedic offices: comparable image quality at 40 to 60 percent below new |
| Used, as-is | Sold as inspected and described, without a full rebuild; tube history, detector condition and software licenses stated on the quote | As described; limited or no warranty | Buyers with their own service arrangement who want the lowest entry cost |

C-arm rental
We rent mini, full-size and 3D C-arms by the month, delivered, set up and supported for the term, for a system out for repair, a second room, a new service line or a trial before purchase. Monthly ranges, what the rental includes and how the term changes the rate are on our C-arm rental page.
Room, shielding and power
A mobile C-arm needs no purpose-built room, only a radiation safety plan, operator credentialing and the shielding your physicist and state require for the rooms it is used in. It plugs into a standard dedicated circuit on most systems; the higher-power vascular platforms have their own requirements, stated on the quote. A fixed radiography and fluoroscopy room is a different project, with lead shielding designed under NCRP Report 147; see our X-ray range for R/F rooms.
Delivery, installation, service and parts
Medical Outfitters delivers, places and trains with its own crews across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. We service and repair C-arms, including systems bought elsewhere, and stock parts for the platforms we sell; the tube and the detector are the two components that decide a system's running cost, so ask for the service contract in writing with the purchase quote. We also buy used imaging equipment, so a system you are retiring may offset the new one.
C-arm buying FAQ
Do you sell used C-arms?
Yes. We sell certified refurbished C-arms, inspected and tested to specification with a written warranty, and as-is used systems for facilities with their own service arrangement. GE OEC, Siemens and Philips C-arms are sourced refurbished or used on request; ask about units not yet listed. Our used C-arm buying guide covers what to check.
What comes with a refurbished C-arm from Medical Outfitters?
A system inspected and tested to specification with the X-ray tube, generator and detector verified for image quality, the workstation or monitor cart, the software as listed, delivery and placement by our own crews, applications training and a written warranty.
Which C-arm brands do you sell new?
Ziehm Imaging, Orthoscan and Fujifilm, as an authorized dealer: the Ziehm Solo FD, Vision FD, Vision RFD and Vision RFD 3D, the Orthoscan TAU 1512, 1515 and 2020 mini C-arms, and the Fujifilm Persona C, Persona CS and FDR Cross. GE OEC, Siemens and Philips systems are sold refurbished or used.
How much does a C-arm cost?
It depends on the format, the detector and the condition, and every quote is written for a specific room. Our C-arm machine cost guide gives the ranges for mini, full-size and 3D systems, new and refurbished, delivered and installed, and places the common models inside them.
Do you rent C-arms?
Yes. We rent mini, full-size and 3D C-arms by the month, delivered, set up and supported for the term, with lower rates on longer terms. Monthly ranges and what the rental includes are on our C-arm rental page.
What is the difference between a mini C-arm and a full-size C-arm?
A mini C-arm images hands, wrists, feet and ankles at a fraction of the dose and footprint of a full-size system, and cannot cover spine, hip or vascular cases. A full-size mobile C-arm is the operating-room workhorse for orthopedics, trauma, spine, pain management and urology. C-arm versus fluoroscopy explains the machines.
Can I trade in my old C-arm?
Yes. We buy and trade in used imaging equipment, remove the old system and handle the logistics on a replacement project, so the system you are retiring may offset the new one.
Do you deliver and install outside Florida?
Yes. Our crews deliver, place and train across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, with freight and import handling planned into island projects.
Tell us the procedures and the room, and we will quote the right C-arm with delivery, installation and training included, or a rental for the dates you need.
