Choosing between a 1.5T and a 3T refurbished MRI machine
3T buys signal, and signal buys resolution and speed on neuro, musculoskeletal and research work. It also brings more susceptibility artefact around implants, a heavier siting burden and a higher running cost. For general outpatient orthopaedic and spine volume, a well configured 1.5T wide bore is usually the better commercial decision. Bore size is worth as much as field strength if your population includes bariatric or claustrophobic patients, which is why the 70 cm systems on this page move quickly.

Slice count is not the whole story on a used CT scanner
Slice count sells scanners and tube condition runs them. On any pre-owned CT the first questions are the tube history and how the detector has been treated, because a tube is the single largest consumable in the machine and replacing one changes the economics of the whole purchase. Reconstruction software and dose reduction packages matter next, then slice count. A 16 slice system with a healthy tube and a full licence set will out-earn a 64 slice bargain that needs a tube in year one.

What to Check Before You Buy Refurbished Medical Imaging Equipment
These are the questions our own engineers ask when they assess a system. Ask them of us, and ask them of anyone else you are quoting against.
Ask what refurbished actually meant on this unit
Get it in writing. Which parts were replaced, what was tested, against whose specification, and who signed it off. If the answer is a brochure paragraph rather than a list, you are buying a used system with a clean cover.
On an MRI, ask about the magnet before anything else
Cold head hours, service history, whether the magnet has ever been ramped down and how it was transported. A magnet is the one component you cannot economically fix after the fact, and helium handling is a specialist job rather than a line item.
On a CT, ask for tube history in numbers
Scan seconds or slice count on the current tube, not a general assurance. Then ask what a replacement costs and who supplies it. That single number tells you more about your three year cost than the purchase price does.
Confirm who installs it and who answers at 7am on a Monday
Ask whether the seller employs the engineers or brokers them. Ask what parts they hold and where. A supplier with stock on a shelf and a service team on payroll behaves very differently in a fault call than one who has to place an order first.

Certified pre-owned should add a written standard and a warranty behind it. Ask any supplier which parts were replaced, what was tested and against whose specification.
That depends entirely on who did the refurbishment and what happens after the install. A properly rebuilt 1.5T MRI or 64 slice CT will run for years. What decides it is whether the work was done to specification, whether parts are on a shelf when something fails, and whether the people who sold it still answer the phone.
Configuration drives the number far more than the model name does. Coil sets, software level, magnet history and the state of your room can move the same model by a wide margin, so we quote each unit individually. Every MO Select system ships with warranty included. The term and the coverage are agreed with you in writing before purchase, so there is no ambiguity once the system is on site. Treat any refurbished MRI or CT sold without a written warranty position as an as-is purchase.
A wide bore MRI has a 70 cm opening instead of the traditional 60 cm. It matters more than most buyers expect. Bariatric patients, claustrophobic patients, shoulder positioning and paediatric comfort all improve, and cancelled scans cost more than the price difference. Most of the refurbished MRI machines on this page are 70 cm.

It also brings more susceptibility artefact around implants, a heavier siting burden and higher running costs. For general outpatient orthopaedic and spine volume, a well configured 1.5T wide bore is usually the better commercial decision.
For routine diagnostic volume, chest, abdomen and trauma triage, a refurbished CT scanner at 16 slice with a healthy tube and a full licence set does the job and sites into smaller rooms. Move up to 64 slice when you need cardiac work, fine vascular detail or faster breath hold coverage.
A rebuilt system with parts support behind it can run for a decade or more. On a used MRI machine the magnet is the long life component and the cold head is the wear item. On a refurbished CT scanner the tube is the clock, and its replacement cost should be in your budget from day one rather than treated as a surprise.
