How to choose an ultrasound machine

Ultrasound is the one imaging purchase where the room is not the constraint: the system, the transducers and the clinical workflow are. Most buyers decide in this order: the platform type (handheld, portable or cart-based), the specialties it must cover, the transducers those specialties need, condition (new or refurbished), then service, probe repair and how to pay. Portable, cart-based or point-of-care?

Point-of-care and portable ultrasound. Emergency departments, ICUs, anesthesia, MSK and mobile services need a system that boots fast, survives being moved and gives a clear answer at the bedside. The Fujifilm Sonosite ZX, Sonosite Edge II and Sonosite M-Turbo are built for exactly that: rugged, laptop-style or compact-cart designs with a wide transducer range (the Edge II works with 15 transducers) and simplified controls.

Cart-based general imaging. Radiology departments, OB/GYN practices and vascular labs need a full keyboard, more transducer ports, 3D/4D and advanced Doppler modes and the image quality to support diagnostic reads. The Fujifilm ARIETTA 50 and ARIETTA 65 cover shared-service and mid-range needs, and the ARIETTA 650, 750 and 850 DeepInsight platforms add higher-end processing for detailed abdominal, small-parts, musculoskeletal and women's-health imaging.

New or refurbished ultrasound machine?

New ultrasound systems. Fujifilm ARIETTA, Lisendo and Sonosite systems sold new carry the manufacturer warranty, the current software release and new transducers, which matter because probe crystals and cables wear with use. New is the right choice for a system that will run all day in a department, and for specialties that depend on the latest imaging modes.

Refurbished ultrasound machines. A refurbished system from a major platform, tested with its transducers and verified for image quality, is the economical option for a second room, a satellite clinic, a mobile service or a practice adding ultrasound for the first time. We source refurbished systems to order and can quote GE, Philips and Siemens units as refurbished or used; we do not sell those brands new. Transducers, probes and what to include in the quote

The transducers decide what an ultrasound machine can do: a curved array for abdominal and OB work, a linear array for vascular, small parts and MSK, a phased array for cardiac, an endocavity probe for OB/GYN and urology, and a TEE probe for echo labs. Each probe is priced separately, and a used probe with worn crystals or a damaged cable will undo the savings on a refurbished system, so every quote we write lists the transducers, their condition and their warranty. Footprint and installation

Unlike MRI and CT, ultrasound needs no shielding or construction: a standard exam room, a dedicated outlet and network access for DICOM and PACS are enough, and a portable system needs only a cart or a bag. What does need planning is connectivity and workflow: worklist integration, image archiving, reporting and, for cardiology, measurement packages. Service contracts, repairs, preventive maintenance and probe repair are available for the major ultrasound brands whether or not the system was purchased from us, with more than 20,000 parts in stock and engineers who work on ultrasound every week.
