How to choose an X-ray machine
Four questions settle most X-ray purchases before a model is ever discussed.
- Where will it be used? A dedicated room with a wall stand and table, or wherever the patient is. That decides fixed versus portable, and it decides whether you need site work at all.
- How many exams a day? A busy emergency department and a two-physician orthopaedic clinic both need an X-ray machine, but not the same generator, tube or detector. Higher volume justifies a higher-output generator and a ceiling-mounted tube that positions faster.
- Digital radiography or computed radiography? DR is now the default, and every system in this category is DR. CR still has a place as a low-cost entry, but it adds a step to every exam. The section below explains the difference.
- New, refurbished or used? The answer depends on how long you plan to run the room and how much of the budget the building work will take. Refurbished digital systems often make sense for a first room or a second site.
If you are not sure which way to go, send us the exam mix and the room drawing. We configure X-ray rooms for radiology departments, urgent care centres, orthopaedic clinics and specialty practices, and we will tell you which of the systems below fits and which would be overkill. For what each system type costs, what moves the price and what a quote includes, read our X-ray machine cost guide; portable and mobile units have their own portable X-ray price guide.
Fixed room, portable or R/F: which X-ray machine you need
Fixed digital radiography (DR) rooms
A fixed X-ray room is the workhorse of general radiography: chest, spine, extremities, abdomen. The tube is mounted on a ceiling rail or a floor stand, the detector sits in a wall bucky and a table bucky, and the generator lives in the equipment closet. The Fujifilm FDR D-EVO Suite II is the complete-room configuration for high-volume departments. The Essentia FS is floor-mounted with a wireless flat panel, which suits rooms where a ceiling rail is impractical, and the Essentia SA is a straight-arm system for orthopaedic and outpatient work where ceiling structure is limited. The Clinica X comes as an overhead tube crane or a floor stand and is built to scale, so a practice can start with the floor-stand version and add the crane later. The Smart Essential sits between them: a straightforward fixed room for clinics that want digital radiography without a full department build.
Portable and mobile X-ray
Mobile and portable X-ray machines bring the exam to the patient: intensive care, emergency, post-surgical wards, nursing facilities, and clinics without a dedicated room. The Carestream DRX-Revolution is a full-size mobile with a 32 kW generator and battery drive, built to cover a hospital. The Fujifilm FDR nano is a compact 90 kg cart with a wireless panel for corridors and lifts that a full-size mobile cannot manage, and the FDR AQRO is a compact mobile digital system in the same spirit. The FDR Xair is different again: a lightweight hand-portable unit for bedside and off-site exams where even a cart cannot go. None of these needs room construction, which is why a portable is often the fastest way to add X-ray capacity.
Radiography and fluoroscopy (R/F) rooms
An R/F room does static radiography and live fluoroscopy in the same space, for contrast studies, swallow studies and guided procedures. The Fujifilm FDR Beyond combines radiography and fluoroscopy in one room. The Apelem Platinum Neo from DMS Imaging is a remote-controlled R/F table with 90-degree tilt, operated from the control room, for sites that run a steady fluoroscopy list. If you only occasionally need fluoro, a mobile C-arm alongside a DR room is often the better spend; see our C-arm range.
Veterinary X-ray
The Fujifilm VXR is a veterinary X-ray room with a 32 kW generator and a digital detector, configured for animal patients rather than adapted from a human room.
DR versus CR, and what the generator rating means
Digital radiography (DR) captures the exposure on a flat panel detector and puts the image on screen within seconds. Wireless panels can be shared between the wall stand, the table and a second room, and there is no cassette handling. Computed radiography (CR) exposes a reusable imaging plate in a cassette, which is then fed through a reader to produce the digital image. CR costs less to enter and can retrofit an older analogue room, but it adds a reader cycle to every exam and the plates wear. Every X-ray machine in this category is a DR system.
The generator rating, quoted in kilowatts, is the other number that matters. A higher-output generator delivers the exposure in a shorter time, which reduces motion blur on larger patients and thicker anatomy. The 32 kW class on the DRX-Revolution and the VXR is a full clinical output; smaller portables trade output for weight and battery life, which is the right trade for bedside work.
New, refurbished or used X-ray machine?
New brings current detector technology, the manufacturer warranty and the longest service life. As an authorized Fujifilm dealer we quote new systems with delivery, installation and training included. Refurbished systems from Medical Outfitters are fully inspected and tested, with the digital detector verified for image quality before delivery, and they typically cost a fraction of new. Used equipment is sold as inspected and described, for buyers who want the lowest entry cost and have their own service arrangement.
The honest guidance: the building work for a fixed room, shielding, power and the wall and table stands, costs about the same whether the system inside is new or refurbished. So the saving on a refurbished system is real, but it is a saving on the equipment line only. A refurbished mobile, by contrast, is almost all equipment cost, which is why refurbished portables are the most common first purchase. For the difference between a dealer refurbishment and a manufacturer-certified one, see refurbished versus OEM certified imaging equipment.

Room requirements and siting
A fixed X-ray room needs three things the equipment quote does not include. Shielding: lead in the walls, door and control window, sized to the room layout, the equipment and the expected workload, and specified by a qualified medical physicist to your state's requirements. Do not size shielding from a rule of thumb; the assessment is a required document, not a formality. Power: a dedicated supply sized to the generator, which is a larger feed than most clinic rooms carry. Structure: a ceiling-mounted tube needs a rail fixed to structure that can take the load, which is why floor-mounted and straight-arm systems exist for buildings that cannot provide it. Our team helps plan the room as part of a fixed-system installation, and a portable or mobile unit needs none of this, which is often the deciding factor. Which systems fit which room, ceiling heights and the shielding design are explained in our guide to what size room an X-ray machine needs.
Delivery, installation, service and parts
Medical Outfitters delivers, rigs and installs with its own crews rather than subcontracting, and every fixed-room install includes applications training so your technologists are productive from the first day. After installation we service what we sell, and our parts division stocks tubes, detectors and components for the systems in this category and for the wider fleet of X-ray equipment in the field. If you are retiring an X-ray machine, we buy used imaging equipment; see who buys used medical imaging equipment.
X-ray machine FAQ
How much does an X-ray machine cost?
It depends on the system type, the detector and the room. Portable, mobile and fixed digital radiography systems each sell in a different price band, and a certified refurbished system typically saves 20 to 60 percent versus new. Medical Outfitters quotes all-in pricing that includes delivery, rigging and installation; our X-ray machine cost guide lists the current ranges for each type and what moves the price.
What is the difference between a digital X-ray machine and a CR system?
Digital radiography (DR) captures the image on a flat panel detector and displays it within seconds, with wireless panels that can be shared between rooms. Computed radiography (CR) exposes a reusable cassette that is then scanned by a reader, which costs less to enter but adds a step to every exam. Every X-ray system in this category is a DR system.
Do you sell used and refurbished X-ray machines?
Yes. We sell new systems as an authorized Fujifilm dealer, and refurbished and used X-ray machines that are inspected and tested before delivery, with digital detectors verified for image quality. We also buy used X-ray equipment.
What is a portable X-ray machine used for?
Portable and mobile X-ray units bring imaging to the patient: bedside exams in intensive care and emergency, nursing facilities, and clinics without a dedicated X-ray room. A lightweight unit like the Fujifilm FDR Xair is carried to the bedside, while mobile carts such as the Carestream DRX-Revolution and Fujifilm FDR nano roll between rooms on their own generator and battery.
Do you deliver and install X-ray machines?
Yes. Medical Outfitters delivers, rigs and installs with its own crews across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and provides applications training for your technologists. Fixed rooms include help with room planning; portable units need no installation.
Which X-ray equipment brands do you carry?
This category carries Fujifilm digital radiography rooms and portables, the Carestream DRX-Revolution mobile system, and the Apelem Platinum Neo radiography and fluoroscopy table from DMS Imaging.
Does an X-ray room need shielding?
Yes. A fixed X-ray room needs lead shielding sized to the room, the equipment and the workload, specified by a qualified medical physicist to your state's requirements. Portable units used at the bedside rely on distance and operator protection rather than room shielding.
What used X-ray machines are for sale right now?
The new Fujifilm rooms, portables and mobiles and the Carestream DRX-Revolution are listed in the inventory table above. Refurbished and used X-ray systems, including mobile units from GE, Siemens and Carestream and complete DR rooms, are sourced per project and rotate quickly, so ask for current units.
Is refurbished X-ray equipment worth buying?
Yes, when the generator, tube and detector are tested to specification and the system carries a written warranty. The building work for a fixed room costs the same whether the system inside is new or refurbished, so the saving is on the equipment line; a refurbished mobile or portable is almost all equipment cost, which is why it is the most common first refurbished purchase.
Do you sell used portable X-ray machines?
Yes. Portable and mobile units are sold new, as an authorized Fujifilm dealer, and refurbished or used when we source them. Check the detector, the battery, the tube and generator and the software support status before you buy; our portable X-ray price guide covers the classes and what to check.
Do you buy used X-ray equipment?
Yes. We buy and trade in used X-ray equipment, de-install and remove the old system as part of a replacement project, and handle the detector and generator logistics.
