What to check before buying a used bone densitometer
Ask for the X-ray source and detector age, the calibration and phantom scan history, the software version and licensed options, the reference database included and the condition of the table and C-arm mechanics. A DEXA that drifts out of calibration produces wrong T-scores, so the quality control history matters more than the cosmetic condition. Can a refurbished DEXA bill for the same exams as a new one?
Yes. Reimbursement depends on the exam and the provider, not the age of the machine, as long as the system is calibrated and the quality control program is in place.
Which brand should I choose?
Hologic and GE Lunar both have deep pre-owned supply and parts availability. Facilities that already report against one brand's reference database usually stay with that brand to keep results comparable.
Do refurbished DEXA machines come with a warranty?
