Antigua, St. John’s Hospital MRI Rescue Mission

About the Mission

COVID-19 had shut down international travel. Despite this, our team flew to Antigua in a Cessna 182T single-engine aircraft to deliver emergency MRI cryogenic services. The mission sounded like Mission Impossible.

The obstacles were serious. International passenger flights were restricted. Lodging and food were scarce on the island. Additionally, the aircraft developed engine problems mid-flight. The final leg of the journey crossed the Bermuda Triangle.

This video tells that story. Our team went to extreme measures to prevent the only MRI system in a public hospital in Antigua from quenching and going warm.

The GE 450 MRI system was at critical risk of quenching. A quench is an uncontrolled release of liquid helium that can permanently damage a superconducting MRI magnet. As a result, the system could have been offline for weeks or months.

Without intervention, the consequences would have been severe. St. John’s Hospital is Antigua’s only public hospital. Therefore, thousands of patients would have lost access to MRI services entirely.

What Is MRI Quenching?

An MRI machine relies on superconducting magnets kept at near-absolute zero temperatures using liquid helium. When helium levels drop, the cryogenic cooling system can fail. Consequently, the MRI magnet quenches — rapidly venting helium gas and losing its superconducting state.

This can permanently damage the MRI system. Furthermore, it requires costly magnet re-energization or full replacement. For a small island hospital with no backup imaging system, a quench event is a clinical emergency.

Cryogenic Services & MRI Support Across the Caribbean

This project demonstrates the lengths our team will go to keep critical radiology equipment operational. Medical Outfitters provides comprehensive MRI cryogenic services. These include helium fills, cold head replacement, compressor repair, and 24/7 magnet monitoring.

Our team is ready to deploy across the Caribbean basin and Latin America. Whether you need an emergency cryofill, a scheduled helium service, or ongoing magnet monitoring, we can help. No project is too remote.
