A refurbished Siemens MAGNETOM Espree costs $475,000 to $700,000 in 2026, delivered, installed and warrantied. It is the value entry to a 70 cm bore at 1.5T: the system that first made high-field imaging workable for larger, older and claustrophobic patients, now two generations behind Siemens’ current platform and priced accordingly. New 70 cm 1.5T systems run $1,200,000 to $2,000,000 in our MRI cost guide.
This guide covers what the Espree is, the Tim configurations it was built in, our 2026 range, what moves an Espree quote, what to check before buying one that is now fifteen to twenty years old, who it suits against the Aera and the open Hitachi AIRIS systems, and how to buy one through MO Select. Specifications are Siemens’ published figures, checked 28 September 2026.
What Is the Siemens MAGNETOM Espree?
The Siemens MAGNETOM Espree is a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner introduced in 2004 as the first 70 cm bore high-field system. Siemens called the design Open Bore: a cylindrical magnet in a system only 125 cm long from cover to cover, so that for most spine, knee and body exams the patient’s head is outside the bore. It is not a two-pillar open MRI; it is a short, wide tube with the image quality of a conventional 1.5T.
The Espree runs on the original Tim (Total imaging matrix) coil platform. Systems were built as Tim [76 x 18], [102 x 18] and [102 x 32], the numbers being coil elements and receive channels, and the higher configurations combine more coil elements in one exam for whole-spine and whole-body studies. Gradients are 33 mT/m at 125 T/m/s, and the magnet uses Siemens’ zero helium boil-off design.
A dedicated breast version, the MAGNETOM Espree-Pink, was sold with a breast coil and biopsy workflow. Production of the Espree ended as the Aera took over the 70 cm 1.5T slot, so every Espree on the market today is a refurbished or used system, and the buying questions are about age, configuration and support rather than options.

MAGNETOM Espree Configurations
The Tim configuration and the software level are what separate one Espree from another on the used market.
| Configuration | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Espree Tim [76 x 18] | The base configuration: 76 coil elements, 18 receive channels | Routine outpatient imaging, single-region exams |
| Espree Tim [102 x 18] | More coil elements on the same 18 channels | Whole-spine and multi-station studies |
| Espree Tim [102 x 32] | The top configuration: 32 receive channels | Sites that run parallel imaging and the widest coil set |
| Software level | syngo MR B15, B17 and B19 releases circulate | B19 is the level most buyers want; earlier releases limit sequences |
| Espree-Pink | Breast-dedicated configuration with breast coil and biopsy workflow | Breast centres; quoted per unit |
Because the Espree is out of production, the configuration a unit was upgraded to over its life is what you buy; we verify each system against its records rather than the original build sheet.

What Moves the Price of a MAGNETOM Espree
Two quotes for the same MAGNETOM Espree can differ by a whole configuration. These are the lines that move the price, roughly in order of impact.
- Tim configuration [102 x 32] systems carry the premium; [76 x 18] systems sit at the bottom of the band
- Software level B19 systems cost more than B15 or B17 systems because the sequence library is wider
- Coil set Matrix coils are each a line; a complete set moves the price by tens of thousands
- Cold head and helium history Documented cold head service and a stable helium level are worth paying for on a magnet of this age
- Siting Reusing the RF room, chiller and power supply keeps the installed price down
- Warranty Our range includes the MO Select warranty; an as-is sale reads cheaper for a reason
What to Check Before You Buy a Used MAGNETOM Espree
A used MAGNETOM Espree is bought on its records. These are the checks our engineers run and the questions to put to any seller before you sign.
- Age and hours: Espree systems were built from 2004 into the early 2010s. Ask for the install date, the upgrade history and the last five years of service records.
- Tim configuration and software: Confirm [76 x 18], [102 x 18] or [102 x 32] from the system data and the syngo MR release (B15, B17 or B19), with the licensed sequences in writing.
- Coil complement: Head Matrix, Body Matrix, Spine Matrix and the dedicated coils are each a line. Test every coil before shipment.
- Helium level and cold head: Zero boil-off design, so a falling level means a cold head or compressor issue; ask for the log and the last reading.
- Gradient and RF amplifiers: Age shows first in the amplifier cabinets. Ask what has been replaced and what is original.
- Support horizon: Confirm the manufacturer’s support position and third-party parts availability for the exact software level; this decides how many years the system has left.
- Room and power: A 125 cm system fits rooms many longer magnets cannot. The RF room, chiller and power supply are surveyed and usually reused.
Who the MAGNETOM Espree Suits, and the Alternatives
The Espree suits sites that need real 1.5T image quality but turn patients away from a 60 cm bore.
- Outpatient imaging centres adding a second scanner for bariatric and claustrophobic patients
- Orthopaedic and pain practices doing spine and joint work at moderate volume
- Hospitals in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and Latin America that want a proven 1.5T at the lowest installed price
- Buyers who would otherwise settle for a low-field open system
Alternatives to the MAGNETOM Espree
| Model | Why you would choose it instead |
|---|---|
| Siemens MAGNETOM Aera | The same 70 cm bore on the newer Tim 4G and Dot platform; more channels, XQ gradients and a longer support life for more money |
| Hitachi AIRIS open MRI | A truly open permanent-magnet design at 0.3T for less; better patient access, far lower image quality and speed |
| GE Signa HDxt | A 60 cm 1.5T at a similar price with a deeper parts market, for sites that do not need the wide bore |
| GE Optima MR450w | GE’s 70 cm 1.5T, a generation newer than the Espree |
How to Buy a MAGNETOM Espree
- Send the room, the power supply and the case mix. Room dimensions, the existing RF shielding and chiller, the electrical supply and the exams you run decide the configuration before the model does.
- Choose the configuration. Field strength, channel count, gradients, coil list and software level, matched to the case mix rather than to the largest set.
- Get the configuration in writing. Every coil by name, the software release, the licensed applications, the helium and cold head history and the warranty term, so quotes compare line by line.
- Survey the site. RF room, fringe field, chiller capacity, power and rigging route, before the magnet is bought.
- Schedule the de-installation and rigging. Ramp-down, transport and installation are in our price; the schedule is agreed with your facilities team.
- Agree the warranty and service term. The MO Select warranty is written; a service contract for the years after it is quoted alongside.
- Applications training and go-live. Protocol set-up and technologist training on site.
We quote within one business day and deliver, install, train and support across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean through an ISO 13485:2016 certified quality system. Request a MAGNETOM Espree quote » Current availability is on the MO Select MAGNETOM Espree product page.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does a Siemens MAGNETOM Espree cost?
- A refurbished MAGNETOM Espree costs $475,000 to $700,000 in 2026 delivered, installed and warrantied. A base Tim [76 x 18] system sits at $475,000 to $575,000; a [102 x 18] or [102 x 32] system with an expanded coil set and B19 software runs $550,000 to $700,000. New 70 cm 1.5T systems run $1,200,000 to $2,000,000.
- Is the MAGNETOM Espree an open MRI?
- Siemens calls it Open Bore: a 70 cm cylindrical bore on a system only 125 cm long from cover to cover, so the patient’s head is outside the bore for many exams. It is not a two-pillar open design; for a truly open system see our Hitachi AIRIS guide. The Espree gives high-field image quality that no open permanent-magnet system matches.
- What is the difference between the Espree and the Aera?
- Both are 1.5T with a 70 cm bore. The Aera runs the newer Tim 4G architecture with up to 48 channels, the Dot workflow and optional XQ gradients, on a 145 cm system; the Espree is the earlier Tim platform on a 125 cm system with 33 mT/m gradients. The Espree costs $150,000 to $300,000 less.
- What is the difference between the Espree and the Avanto?
- They share the Tim platform and the 1.5T field. The Avanto has a conventional 60 cm bore with stronger gradient performance; the Espree trades some gradient performance and length for the 70 cm bore. Choose by patient population.
- What does Tim [76 x 18] mean?
- Coil elements by receive channels: 76 coil elements combined across 18 receive channels. [102 x 18] adds elements, and [102 x 32] adds channels for parallel imaging and multi-station studies.
- How old is a MAGNETOM Espree?
- Systems were built from 2004 into the early 2010s, so a unit bought today is fifteen to twenty years old. That is why the service history, the software level and the support horizon matter more than on a newer platform, and why a refurbished system with a warranty is the safe way to buy one.
