A refurbished GE Definium room costs $60,000 to $135,000 in 2026 for the 5000, 6000 and 8000, and $135,000 to $225,000 for a Definium 656 HD, delivered, installed and warrantied. A new 656 HD room through GE is a different scale, an estimated $425,000 to $850,000 installed depending on detectors and installation scope, and Medical Outfitters supplies GE rooms refurbished rather than new. Definium is GE’s fixed digital radiography family, and the model name tells you the positioner: U-arm, floor-mounted or ceiling-suspended. Our X-ray machine cost guide bands DR rooms by detector and generator.
This guide covers what each Definium is, the 5000, 6000, 8000, Discovery XR656 and 656 HD configurations, our 2026 ranges with new prices for comparison, what moves a Definium quote, what to check on a used DR room, who each model suits, and how to buy one. Specifications are GE’s published figures, checked 28 September 2026.
What Is the GE Definium X-Ray?
GE Definium is GE HealthCare’s family of fixed digital radiography (DR) rooms, sold since the mid-2000s. The Definium 5000 is a single-column U-arm system in which the tube and detector move around the patient on one stand, positioned by hand; the Definium 6000 is a floor-mounted system with a motorised table and wall stand and automated exam protocols; and the Definium 8000 is the overhead tube suspension (OTS) room, with the tube on ceiling rails, automated positioning between protocols and single or dual-detector configurations depending on whether a radiographic table is included.
The Discovery XR656 followed the 8000 with wireless FlashPad detectors, and GE’s current flagship is the Definium 656 HD: an OTS room with FlashPad HD detectors at 100-micron pixels in 43 x 43 cm, 35 x 43 cm and 25 x 30 cm sizes, generators of 50, 65 or 80 kW, Helix image processing and auto-positioning, quoted new at GE’s Gen 6 hardware level, with a Gen 5.1 upgrade path for existing 656 rooms per GE. The Definium Tempo and Pace are GE’s newer floor-mounted rooms.
On the used market the 5000, 6000 and 8000 price like other DR rooms of their generation, by detector and generator; the 656 HD is recent enough that most units are on their first installation, and it is bought new through GE or, occasionally, pre-owned.

How Medical Outfitters sells the Definium. Refurbished, through MO Select, our in-house refurbishment program: each unit is tested against the GE specification, delivered, installed by our own rigging and engineering team and covered by a written warranty. We do not sell GE systems new; the new figures in the table are for comparison. New systems we sell as an authorized dealer are the Fujifilm FDR Clinica X and D-EVO Suite II rooms, the Essentia FS and Essentia SA rooms, the FDR AQRO mobile and FDR Xair portable, and the Persona C, Persona CS and FDR Cross fluoroscopy systems. Definium rooms are sourced as refurbished supply allows. Current availability is on the for-sale listings. Availability of any specific model, year or configuration is subject to supply at the time of your request, and every purchase is governed by the written quote and sales agreement.
The same question arrives in many forms: GE Definium price, Definium 8000 cost, GE Definium 5000 for sale, Definium 656 HD price, GE Definium x-ray machine cost, how much does a Definium cost. They all resolve to the table above. Tell us the configuration and the room and the quote writes itself. Request a Definium quote »
What Moves the Price of a Definium
Two quotes for the same Definium can differ by a whole configuration. These are the lines that move the price, roughly in order of impact.
- Model and positioner U-arm at the bottom, dual-detector OTS at the top
- Detector generation Tethered, wireless FlashPad or FlashPad HD; the detectors are the most expensive components in the room
- Generator 50, 65 or 80 kW on the 656 HD; higher power for bariatric and trauma work
- Tube hours A new or low-hour tube moves the price
- Room work Ceiling rails for an OTS need structure; a U-arm needs almost none
- Warranty Our range includes the MO Select warranty; detector coverage is stated on the quote
What to Check Before You Buy a Used Definium
A used Definium is bought on its records. These are the checks our engineers run and the questions to put to any seller before you sign.
- Detectors: Confirm the detector model, test for dead pixels and lines, and ask for the drop history and the battery condition on wireless FlashPads. A detector replacement is the largest cost on a DR room.
- Generator and tube: Confirm the generator rating and the tube’s hours and exposure count.
- Positioner: On an 8000 or 656 HD, test the OTS motors, the auto-positioning and the collision sensors; on a 5000, check the U-arm brakes and detents.
- Software: Confirm the software version, the image processing (Helix on the HD) and DICOM connectivity to your PACS.
- Table and wall stand: Motorised table travel, weight rating, Bucky and wall stand condition.
- Room fit: An OTS needs ceiling structure for the rails; a floor-mounted or U-arm room needs less. Have the room surveyed before you buy.
- Support horizon: Confirm GE’s support position and the parts route for the 5000 and 6000; the 8000 and later are well supported.
Who the Definium Suits, and the Alternatives
The right Definium follows volume and space: a U-arm for a clinic, a floor-mounted room for a mid-volume site, an OTS for a hospital.
- Clinics, urgent care and orthopaedic practices with limited space (Definium 5000)
- Outpatient imaging centres and smaller hospitals (Definium 6000)
- Hospitals and high-volume departments that need automated positioning and a second detector (Definium 8000, XR656, 656 HD)
- GE sites that want one service ecosystem across radiography and CT
Alternatives to the Definium
| Model | Why you would choose it instead |
|---|---|
| Fujifilm FDR D-EVO Suite II | A new DR room sold by Medical Outfitters as an authorized dealer, in the new fixed-room band |
| Portable X-ray systems | Where a room is not needed: the portable and mobile bands in our portable X-ray price guide |
| X-ray machine cost guide | Every X-ray type and band, with the models in each |
| Siemens Artis zee | For fixed fluoroscopy and angiography rather than radiography |
How to Buy a Definium

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does a GE Definium cost?
- A refurbished Definium 5000 runs $60,000 to $95,000, a Definium 6000 $70,000 to $110,000, a single-detector Definium 8000 $80,000 to $115,000 and a dual-detector 8000 or Discovery XR656 $95,000 to $135,000 in 2026, delivered, installed and warrantied. A refurbished Definium 656 HD runs $135,000 to $225,000, and a new 656 HD through GE an estimated $425,000 to $850,000 installed. Medical Outfitters supplies GE rooms refurbished, not new.
- What is the difference between the Definium 5000 and the Definium 8000?
- The positioner. The 5000 is a single-column U-arm that the technologist positions by hand, suited to smaller rooms and lower volume; the 8000 has an overhead tube suspension on ceiling rails with automated positioning between protocols and single or dual detectors, suited to hospitals.
- What is the difference between the Definium 8000 and the 656 HD?
- Two generations of detector and electronics. The 656 HD is GE’s current OTS room with FlashPad HD 100-micron detectors, 50 to 80 kW generators, Helix image processing and Gen 6 hardware; the 8000 is the earlier OTS room with tethered or first-generation detectors. The 656 HD costs several times as much.
- What is FlashPad HD?
- GE’s wireless flat-panel detector with 100-micron pixels, which GE states gives four times the resolution of 200-micron detectors, in 25 x 30 cm and 35 x 43 cm sizes. It is the detector in the Definium 656 HD.
- Which Definium do I need?
- A clinic or urgent care with one room and modest volume is well served by a Definium 5000 U-arm. A mid-volume outpatient centre fits a floor-mounted 6000. A hospital department that runs a table and a wall stand all day needs the automated positioning and second detector of an 8000, XR656 or 656 HD. Send us the room dimensions and the daily volume and we will place you.
- Should I buy a new or a refurbished DR room?
- A refurbished Definium 8000 or XR656 gives a hospital-grade OTS room for $80,000 to $135,000 installed. A new fixed DR room we sell as an authorized Fujifilm dealer (FDR Clinica X, D-EVO Suite II) runs $150,000 to $275,000 in our X-ray guide, and a new 656 HD through GE an estimated $425,000 to $850,000. Volume, detector expectations and the support horizon decide; our X-ray machine cost guide walks through it.
