A refurbished GE Signa HDxt costs $475,000 to $675,000 at 1.5T and $1,000,000 to $1,300,000 at 3T in 2026, delivered, installed and warrantied. It is the most supportable used GE MRI on the market: a 60 cm bore system with an enormous installed base, plentiful parts and engineers who know it. It is also the lowest-cost route to a hospital-grade 1.5T, which is why it anchors the bottom of the 1.5T band in our MRI cost guide.
This guide covers what the HDxt is, the 8 and 16 channel and software configurations, our 2026 ranges, what moves an HDxt quote, what to check before you buy, who it suits against the wide-bore Optima MR450w and the Siemens Espree, and how to buy one through MO Select. Specifications are GE’s published figures, checked 28 September 2026.
What Is the GE Signa HDxt?
The GE Signa HDxt is the mature version of GE’s HD (high definition) MRI platform, sold from the late 2000s at 1.5T and 3.0T. It has a conventional 60 cm bore, a 48 cm field of view and, at 1.5T, gradients of 33 mT/m at 120 T/m/s, with 8 or 16 receive channels depending on the build. The HDxt name marks the platform’s later software and hardware level, and the 3T version is the same architecture on a 3 Tesla magnet.
The applications are what buyers remember: PROPELLER motion correction, LAVA and IDEAL body imaging, Cube 3D and the cardiac and vascular packages, licensed by software level. Systems circulate at software levels 15.x, 16.x and 23.x, and the 23.x releases are the ones most buyers want because they carry the widest sequence library.
GE replaced the HDxt with the wide-bore Optima MR450w and Discovery MR750w and later the Signa Explorer, Creator and Artist, but it kept the HDxt in service because of the installed base. That is the HDxt’s case: a dependable 1.5T with a low cost of ownership, supported by GE and by a deep independent parts market.

Signa HDxt Configurations
Three things describe an HDxt on the used market: field strength, channel count and software level.
| Configuration | What it is | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| HDxt 1.5T, 8 channel | The base 1.5T build | Routine imaging at the lowest price |
| HDxt 1.5T, 16 channel | 16 receive channels for parallel imaging and multi-element coils | Higher throughput; the configuration most buyers want |
| HDxt 3T | The same platform on a 3 Tesla magnet | Neuro and musculoskeletal detail on a 60 cm bore |
| Software 15.x or 16.x | Earlier releases | Fewer sequences; lower price |
| Software 23.x | The late HDxt releases | The widest sequence library; the level to look for |
| Coil set | 8 or 16 channel HD coils: head, neurovascular, spine, body, cardiac, knee, shoulder | Matched to the channel count; each is a line |
Channel count, software level and the licensed applications are confirmed per unit before we quote.

What Moves the Price of a Signa HDxt
Two quotes for the same Signa HDxt can differ by a whole configuration. These are the lines that move the price, roughly in order of impact.
- Channel count 16 channel systems carry the premium over 8 channel systems
- Software level 23.x releases cost more than 15.x or 16.x because of the sequence library
- Coil set Each HD coil is a line; a complete set moves the price by tens of thousands
- Helium history HDxt magnets consume helium; a documented fill and cold head history is worth paying for
- Siting A 60 cm 1.5T reuses almost any existing 1.5T room
- Warranty Our range includes the MO Select warranty
What to Check Before You Buy a Used Signa HDxt
A used Signa HDxt is bought on its records. These are the checks our engineers run and the questions to put to any seller before you sign.
- Channel count and software: Confirm 8 or 16 channels and the software release with the licensed applications in writing; an 8 channel 15.x system and a 16 channel 23.x system are different purchases.
- Helium consumption and cold head: HDxt magnets are not zero boil-off on every build. Ask for the fill history, the current level and the cold head service record, and budget helium accordingly.
- Coil complement: List and test every coil. Coils must match the channel count.
- Gradient and RF amplifiers: Ask what has been replaced in the cabinets and what is original.
- Quench and ramp history: A planned ramp-down for transport is normal; an unplanned quench needs an explanation.
- Support horizon: Confirm GE’s support position for the exact software level and the independent parts route; the HDxt is well supported today, but the software level matters.
- Room and power: A 60 cm 1.5T fits the room most 1.5T systems already occupy; the RF room, chiller and power supply are surveyed and usually reused.
Who the Signa HDxt Suits, and the Alternatives
The HDxt suits sites that want a dependable general-purpose MRI at the lowest installed price.
- Outpatient centres and smaller hospitals adding or replacing a 1.5T on a tight budget
- GE sites that want to keep one coil, service and applications ecosystem
- Buyers who value parts availability and engineer familiarity over the newest platform
- Sites whose patient population does not need a 70 cm bore
Alternatives to the Signa HDxt
| Model | Why you would choose it instead |
|---|---|
| GE Optima MR450w | GE’s 70 cm 1.5T successor, for wide-bore patient access |
| Siemens MAGNETOM Espree | A 70 cm short-bore 1.5T at a similar price |
| Siemens MAGNETOM Aera | A newer 70 cm 1.5T with the Tim 4G platform, for more money |
| GE Discovery MR750w | The 70 cm 3T alternative to the HDxt 3T |
How to Buy a Signa HDxt
- Send the room, the power supply and the case mix. Room dimensions, the existing RF shielding and chiller, the electrical supply and the exams you run decide the configuration before the model does.
- Choose the configuration. Field strength, channel count, gradients, coil list and software level, matched to the case mix rather than to the largest set.
- Get the configuration in writing. Every coil by name, the software release, the licensed applications, the helium and cold head history and the warranty term, so quotes compare line by line.
- Survey the site. RF room, fringe field, chiller capacity, power and rigging route, before the magnet is bought.
- Schedule the de-installation and rigging. Ramp-down, transport and installation are in our price; the schedule is agreed with your facilities team.
- Agree the warranty and service term. The MO Select warranty is written; a service contract for the years after it is quoted alongside.
- Applications training and go-live. Protocol set-up and technologist training on site.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does a GE Signa HDxt cost?
- A refurbished Signa HDxt 1.5T costs $475,000 to $675,000 in 2026 delivered, installed and warrantied: $475,000 to $575,000 for an 8 channel system on earlier software and $525,000 to $675,000 for a 16 channel system on 23.x software with an expanded coil set. An HDxt 3T runs $1,000,000 to $1,300,000.
- What is the difference between the HDxt and the Optima MR450w?
- Bore size and generation. The HDxt is a 60 cm bore system on the HD platform; the Optima MR450w is the 70 cm wide-bore successor with 32 channels and 44 mT/m gradients. The MR450w costs more; the HDxt is the value choice where bore size is not the issue.
- 8 channel or 16 channel?
- 16 channels support higher parallel imaging factors and multi-element coils, so exams run faster. An 8 channel system does the same exams more slowly and costs less. Buy 16 channels if throughput matters.
- Is the Signa HDxt still supported?
- Yes. GE kept the HDxt in service because of its installed base, and the independent parts and service market is one of the deepest in MRI. Confirm the support position for the exact software level on the unit you are buying.
- What does software 23.x mean?
- GE’s late HDxt software releases. They carry the widest sequence library and the most applications, which is why 23.x systems command a premium over 15.x and 16.x systems.
- Does the HDxt use much helium?
- More than a modern zero boil-off magnet. Ask for the fill history and the current level, and budget for helium and cold head service in the running cost.
- Does Medical Outfitters sell the GE Signa HDxt?
