Published 26 October 2026. Prices are Medical Outfitters ranges for a system delivered, installed and warrantied, quoted individually for every site, and they are the 3T bands of our MRI machine cost guide as updated on 19 October 2026. Specifications are the manufacturers’ published figures as recorded on our model guides. Written by the Medical Outfitters sales and field engineering team.

Quick answer: A 3T MRI machine costs $1,000,000 to $1,900,000 refurbished, delivered, installed and warrantied by Medical Outfitters, and $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 new; a refurbished 1.5T on the same platform runs $475,000 to $975,000, so the 3T premium is $350,000 to $1,000,000 before the larger room, shielding and rigging a 3T magnet needs.

A 3T MRI machine costs $1,000,000 to $1,900,000 refurbished and $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 new, delivered, installed and warrantied. Refurbished, that is a GE Signa HDxt 3T or Siemens Verio at the bottom of the band, a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra or GE Discovery MR750w in the middle, and a fully optioned MR750w GEM or Philips Ingenia 3.0T at the top. New 3T systems are sourced on request; the new band is an estimate of current list pricing for comparison. These are the 3T rows of our MRI machine cost guide, taken apart here on their own page.

A 3 tesla magnet gives roughly twice the signal of a 1.5T magnet, and the scanner spends it on finer detail, faster scans or both, which is why 3T is the field strength for neuro, musculoskeletal, prostate and research imaging. In exchange it costs about twice as much to buy, stores about four times the energy, throws a larger fringe field and needs a bigger room. This guide covers what a 3T MRI machine costs by condition, by model and by generation, what moves the price, what a quote includes, the 3T premium over 1.5T platform by platform, what the room needs, what it costs to run, new versus refurbished, who should buy one, and how to choose.

Pricing

How Much Does a 3T MRI Machine Cost?

A 3T MRI machine price is set by condition first and platform second, because every 3T on the market is a superconducting 60 cm or 70 cm magnet from one of three makers, and the brand moves a quote less than the generation, the coil set and the software do. The figures are Medical Outfitters ranges for a system delivered, installed and warrantied; a refurbished 3T saves 40 to 60 percent against new on the same platform.

The same question arrives as 3 tesla MRI machine price, 3T MRI machine price, 3T MRI machine cost, 3T MRI cost, how much does a 3T MRI cost, 3 tesla MRI cost, 3 tesla MRI machine cost and 3T MRI scanner price, and the table answers all of them. Searches for a 3T MRI for sale or a used 3T MRI for sale land on the refurbished row, where nearly the whole 3T market buys; our current units are on the used MRI machines for sale page and in the MRI machines category. A 3T figure quoted without delivery, installation and a warranty is an equipment-only price, which the quote section converts; a figure quoted without the coil list is not a usable number at all, because 3T coils are the most expensive coils in MRI.

Averages hide the generation split. Across the systems we quote, a refurbished 3T averages in the low seven figures delivered and installed, and a new 3T averages well over two million dollars. An average 3T MRI machine price quoted without the generation and the coil set is not a usable number.

Price List

3T MRI Machine Price by Model (2026): Skyra, MR750w, Ingenia, Verio and HDxt

The 3T MRI machine price list below places the five 3T platforms we sell or source inside the bands above. GE and Siemens systems are rebuilt through MO Select, our in-house refurbishment program, tested against the manufacturer specification, delivered and installed by our own crews and covered by a written warranty; the Siemens Verio and the Philips Ingenia 3.0T are sourced refurbished on request and quoted the same way. We do not sell GE, Siemens or Philips systems new, so each new figure is an estimated list price for the maker’s current 3T, printed for comparison only; new 3T systems are sourced on request.

Three notes on the rows. A Siemens Skyra price depends on the Tim 4G channel count more than anything else: a [204 x 48] system with the base coil set sits at the bottom of the band and a [204 x 64] or [204 x 128] system with high-density coils and later syngo software at the top. A GE Discovery MR750w price turns on GEM, decided at build, because the posterior array in the table and the anterior arrays that go with it are the configuration high-throughput sites want. A Philips Ingenia 3T price follows the software release and the coil set, with the Elition-class units at the top; a Siemens Verio price is the lowest entry to a 70 cm 3T, on a discontinued platform whose support horizon is the question to settle before the price.

Tiers

3T MRI Price by Generation and Year

The tiers below are the 3T row of the MRI guide’s price-by-field-strength table, and they place every 3T quote we write.

TierMedical Outfitters range, all-inSystemsWhat the tier buys
Entry: first-generation 3T, 2006 to 2010$1,000,000 to $1,300,000GE Signa HDxt 3T, Siemens Verio, Skyra standard [204 x 48]A tested 3T with the base coil set and earlier software: full 3T signal for neuro and musculoskeletal work at the lowest 3T price

Used 3T MRI price by year of manufacture

Year of manufacture is the quickest way to place a used 3T MRI for sale inside the band before the coil list and the service history are known. The figures are the 3T column of the used MRI table on our MRI guide, refurbished, delivered, installed and warrantied; an as-is unit sold where it stands prices below them.

Year of manufacture3T platformsRefurbished, all-in
2003 to 2007Siemens Trio, GE Signa HDx 3T$1,000,000 to $1,200,000
2008 to 2012Siemens Verio, early Skyra, early Discovery MR750w$1,000,000 to $1,450,000
2013 to 2017Later Skyra, Discovery MR750w GEM, later Ingenia 3.0T$1,300,000 to $1,900,000
2018 and newerMAGNETOM Vida, Signa Premier, Elition; few refurbished units circulate$1,600,000 to $1,900,000, quoted per unit

Two cautions carry across every year. The magnet’s helium behaviour is a property of the individual magnet rather than the field strength: the Skyra and the Ingenia run zero boil-off magnets, the GE HD-era magnets consume helium and need fills, so the cold head hours and the helium level on the day of survey decide more than the model year. And a 3T platform the manufacturer no longer supports is the harder one to keep accredited, which is why the Verio and the HDxt 3T anchor the bottom of the band; how long an MRI machine lasts covers the support horizons and the used MRI machine buying guide sets out what to check on any used magnet before the price is agreed.

Comparison

3T vs 1.5T MRI Price, Platform by Platform

On the machine itself, the gap between 1.5T and 3T is roughly two to one, and it is easiest to see platform by platform, because the three makers each sold a 1.5T and a 3T on the same architecture. The figures are the refurbished Medical Outfitters ranges from the model guides.

Platform1.5T, refurbished3T, refurbishedWhat the pair shows
GESigna HDxt 1.5T: $475,000 to $675,000Signa HDxt 3T: $1,000,000 to $1,300,000Same 60 cm HD platform; the 3T magnet roughly doubles the price
GE wide boreOptima MR450w 1.5T: $600,000 to $900,000Discovery MR750w 3T: $1,100,000 to $1,750,000The 70 cm siblings; the MR750w is roughly twice the MR450w
Siemens wide boreMAGNETOM Aera 1.5T: $650,000 to $975,000MAGNETOM Skyra 3T: $1,000,000 to $1,600,000Same Tim 4G and Dot platform; the Skyra runs $350,000 to $600,000 more than the Aera
Philips wide boreIngenia 1.5T: $600,000 to $975,000Ingenia 3.0T: $1,100,000 to $1,900,000Same dStream platform; the 3.0T adds Omega HP gradients and the Xtend field of view

Read across the table and the pattern is plain: a 3T costs $350,000 to $1,000,000 more than the equivalent 1.5T on the same platform, before the 3T room, which is the premium the extra signal has to earn back. New systems sit a band higher at both field strengths, $1,025,000 to $2,000,000 at 1.5T and $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 at 3T. What the extra signal buys clinically, and what it costs in RF heating, artifacts and implant exclusions, is the subject of 1.5T vs 3T MRI; bore design, which decides patient comfort rather than the band, is covered in wide-bore vs open vs closed MRI.

Price Drivers

What Moves a 3T MRI Machine Price

Six things decide where a 3T quote lands inside its band, and the badge is the least of them.

  • Channel count and coil set. 3T coils cost more than their 1.5T equivalents and decide the day-one case mix. A Skyra [204 x 48] with the base coils and the same magnet at [204 x 128] with high-density head, spine and body coils are a band apart; a Discovery MR750w with the GEM suite prices above a standard one; an Ingenia 3.0T with the full dStream coil set prices above a base unit. Ask for the coil list, by name and channel count, with the quote.
  • Software release and licensed packages. Each platform circulates at several levels: syngo MR D13 through E11 and later on the Skyra, DV releases on the MR750w, 15.x to 23.x on the HDxt, R5 releases on the Ingenia. The later release carries more sequences and more coil support, and the neuro, body, cardiac, spectroscopy and functional packages are licensed per unit.
  • Bore and generation. A 60 cm HDxt 3T prices below a 70 cm Skyra or MR750w of the same age, because the wide-bore platforms are newer and the demand for 70 cm bores from bariatric, oncology and anxious patients is high. Wide-bore 3T systems also hold their value best for the same reason.
  • Gradients and RF. XQ gradients on the Skyra (45 mT/m at 200 T/m/s), 44 mT/m at 200 T/m/s with MultiDrive on the MR750w and Omega HP on the Ingenia 3.0T are part of each platform’s specification; the transmit design (TimTX TrueForm, MultiDrive, parallel RF transmission) is what each maker built to even out the RF field, the main image-quality problem 3T introduces in body imaging.
  • Magnet, helium and cold head. Zero boil-off magnets (Skyra, Ingenia) make the cold head the service item; helium-consuming magnets (the GE HD generation) add a cryogen line. The cold head hours and the helium level on the day of survey move a quote up or down.
  • Condition and support status. A refurbished unit with a current software release, a tested coil set, documented service and a written warranty prices at the top of its tier; a discontinued platform prices at the bottom whatever its hours.

Brand, by contrast, moves a 3T quote inside the band rather than between bands: at the same field strength and bore size the top systems from GE, Siemens and Philips image comparably, which is the one rule our MRI manufacturers comparison carries through every class.

Quote Scope

What Is Included in a 3T MRI Machine Price?

A Medical Outfitters 3T MRI price is an all-in figure: the system with its coil set and software, freight and rigging, installation and calibration, applications training and a written warranty. The RF-shielded suite, the magnetic shielding, the quench vent, electrical work and other site construction are quoted per project because every 3T room is different, and the cryogen volume at ramp-up is quoted per magnet. Published equipment-only figures for used 3T systems are a different number, and the row below converts one to the other.

ClassEquipment-only figures published elsewhereMedical Outfitters, delivered, installed and warrantiedWhat the Medical Outfitters figure adds
3T$400,000 to $900,000$1,000,000 to $1,900,000 refurbished; $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 newAs at 1.5T (freight and rigging, installation, applications training, a written warranty), plus the quench vent and magnet-room coordination and a larger cryogen volume, quoted per project

The gap between the two columns is the installation, the warranty and the work that turns a magnet on a pallet into a system that scans patients, and at 3T that work is heavier than at 1.5T: a 3T magnet weighs roughly 6 to 8 metric tons against 3 to 5 at 1.5T, so the rigging, the route in and the floor are all part of the quote. How an MRI is moved lays out the sequence from site survey to ramp-up, and the used MRI buying guide explains why a used MRI is bought twice, once as a machine and once as a project.

Siting

What Does a 3T MRI Need in the Room?

A 3T magnet stores about four times the energy of a 1.5T magnet of the same design, is heavier, and throws a larger fringe field. In practice that means a bigger volume to control around the room, more magnetic shielding where the 5-gauss line would otherwise cross a corridor or the floor above, an RF-shielded enclosure sized for the system, a quench vent, heavier rigging and a floor that can take the load. That is the siting premium on top of the purchase premium, and it is why 3T is usually a second system rather than a first.

We do not publish a standard 3T room size, because the honest answer comes from the manufacturer’s site planning drawing for the specific system; send us the model and the floor plan and we will tell you whether it fits. The Skyra is a 173 cm system around a 163 cm magnet with a 70 cm bore, the MR750w a 70 cm wide-bore system with a 50 x 50 x 50 cm field of view, the HDxt a conventional 60 cm bore: the room follows the drawing for each. Our MRI room shielding and size requirements post covers RF shielding, magnetic shielding, structural loading, the quench vent and the 5-gauss line for every class, and the siting section of the MRI machine cost guide covers the project side.

Safety follows the same physics. The pull on a ferromagnetic object roughly doubles and the torque roughly quadruples at 3T, RF heating of conductive implants and leads is about four times higher, and an implant labelled MR Conditional at 1.5T has been tested under 1.5T conditions and nothing else. A 3T-only site needs a referral path for implant patients, and a site with both field strengths routes them to the 1.5T by policy; the FDA overview of MRI benefits and risks covers the general risks of the MR environment.

Running Cost

How Much Does It Cost to Run a 3T MRI?

A 3T runs like any superconducting magnet, with the amounts scaled up: a service contract priced per year as a percentage of system value, which on a 3T is a percentage of a larger number; the cold head on a replacement interval; cryogens where the magnet consumes them; the chiller; and the coil set, which on a 3T is the component most worth covering because each coil is the price of a small car. The clause that decides whether a contract is complete is coil coverage, and the second is whether the cold head and the cryogen line are inside it. Our MRI service, repair and maintenance page explains how a contract is priced and what a preventive maintenance visit covers, and what an MRI helium refill costs covers the cryogen side.

Philips Ingenia: the bore and a dStream coil connector. On the Ingenia 3.0T the analogue-to-digital conversion sits inside each coil, which is why the coil set, not the console, carries the value on a used unit. Photo courtesy of Philips.

The other side of the running-cost question is what the extra signal earns. A 3T scans faster or finer than a 1.5T, which shortens the slot on the protocols that benefit, and it draws the neuro, prostate and musculoskeletal referrals that a 1.5T site sends elsewhere; what the exam itself pays is in how much an MRI scan costs. The business case is the referral base, not the signal, and a community center whose mix is general usually earns more per dollar on a wide-bore 1.5T.

Condition

New vs Refurbished 3T MRI Machine Price

Four conditions exist in the 3T market, and they are not four points on one scale.

  • New, sourced on request. Medical Outfitters does not sell GE, Siemens or Philips systems new and sells no new 3T of its own; a new 3T (MAGNETOM Vida class, Signa Premier class, Elition class) is sourced on request and quoted per project. The $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 band is an estimate of current list pricing for comparison, not a Medical Outfitters offer.
  • MO Select refurbished. The GE Signa HDxt 3T, GE Discovery MR750w and Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra, rebuilt through MO Select, our in-house refurbishment program: each unit is tested against the manufacturer specification, delivered, installed by our own rigging and engineering team and covered by a written warranty. This is where most of the 3T market buys.
  • Sourced refurbished on request. The Siemens Verio and the Philips Ingenia 3.0T, tested, delivered, installed and warrantied by Medical Outfitters; we install and service Philips equipment and have installed and de-installed Philips 3T systems for clients.
  • As-is used. The lowest price. The magnet is tested as it stands, the cold head, helium level and coil set are sold in their current condition, and the buyer arranges rigging, installation, calibration and service. It suits a site with an engineer on contract and a cryogen budget; it is the wrong first 3T for a new program.

A refurbished 3T generally runs 40 to 60 percent below new on the same platform. The 3T-specific point is that the premium platforms, the wide-bore Skyra and MR750w, hold their value best, so the saving against new is largest on them in dollars and smallest in percentage; the HDxt 3T and the Verio are the value buys because they sit at the bottom of their band and depreciate faster. The refurbished imaging equipment page explains what a Medical Outfitters refurbished system includes.

Decision

Who Should Buy a 3T MRI?

For the brain, small joints, the prostate and any exam that lives on fine detail, 3T is the right field strength: neuro, musculoskeletal and prostate imaging, spectroscopy, functional and diffusion work in hospitals, academic centers and the specialist outpatient groups that serve them. For patients with implants labelled for 1.5T only, for large patients, for cardiac and much abdominal work, 1.5T is often the better tool, because the price of the extra signal is four times the RF heating, twice the artifact near metal and air, and a magnet that is harder to site.

  • Buy a 3T first when the referral base is neuro, prostate or research and the room can take the magnet: the premium platforms (Skyra expanded, MR750w GEM, Ingenia 3.0T) earn it back on those protocols.
  • Buy a 3T second when a wide-bore 1.5T already carries the general schedule and the implant patients, and the 3T takes the detail work; the entry 3T tier (HDxt 3T, Verio, Skyra standard) is the usual choice for a second magnet.
  • Buy a wide-bore 1.5T instead when the mix is general, which for most new outpatient centers means brain, spine, knees, shoulders, abdomen and oncology follow-up; the Aera, Optima MR450w and Ingenia 1.5T are the platforms, and the MRI guide’s 1.5T tiers price them.

Open access is a different decision from field strength: a claustrophobic, pediatric or bariatric caseload is served by a wide-bore 3T or by an open system, and the open class has its own page in our open MRI machine cost guide.

Checklist

How to Choose a 3T MRI Machine

Five questions settle the 3T decision.

  • Which 3T tier matches the referrals? Entry (HDxt 3T, Verio, Skyra standard) for a second magnet that takes the detail work; mid (MR750w standard, Ingenia Omega HP, Skyra expanded) for a wide-bore 3T carrying a hospital schedule; premium (MR750w GEM, Elition class) for advanced neuro, body and cardiac programs.
  • Which ecosystem? A site with GE engineers, coils and protocols buys the MR750w; a Siemens site the Skyra; a Philips site the Ingenia 3.0T. Parts and support depth decide the next ten years more than the brochure does: GE and Siemens have the largest installed bases in our markets, which is why they are the platforms we refurbish through MO Select.
  • What room do you have? The manufacturer’s site planning drawing decides it; the 5-gauss line, the floor load, the quench vent and the route in are the four questions a 3T survey answers first.
  • Which coils and which software? Price the coil list and the software release, not the console. A 3T with three coils is a different purchase from the same 3T with twelve.
  • What is the helium story? A zero boil-off Skyra or Ingenia with documented cold head hours; a GE HD-era magnet with its helium history; and in either case the level on the day of survey.

Tell us what you scan and the room you have, and we will recommend two or three 3T systems at the right tier with delivery, installation and a service plan in the quote. Current units are on the MRI machines for sale page.

FAQ

3T MRI Machine Price: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 3T MRI machine cost?
A 3T MRI machine costs $1,000,000 to $1,900,000 refurbished, delivered, installed and warrantied by Medical Outfitters, and $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 new. Refurbished, a GE Signa HDxt 3T or Siemens Verio runs $1,000,000 to $1,300,000, a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra $1,000,000 to $1,600,000, a GE Discovery MR750w $1,100,000 to $1,750,000 and a Philips Ingenia 3.0T $1,100,000 to $1,900,000.
How much more does a 3T MRI cost than a 1.5T?
About twice as much on the machine: a refurbished 1.5T runs $475,000 to $975,000 against $1,000,000 to $1,900,000 for a refurbished 3T, so a 3T costs $350,000 to $1,000,000 more than the equivalent 1.5T on the same platform. New, the bands are $1,025,000 to $2,000,000 at 1.5T and $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 at 3T. The 3T room, with more shielding, a larger fringe field to control and heavier rigging, adds to the premium.
How much is a used 3T MRI machine?
A used 3T MRI runs $1,000,000 to $1,900,000 refurbished, delivered, installed and warrantied. By year of manufacture, 2003 to 2007 units run $1,000,000 to $1,200,000, 2008 to 2012 $1,000,000 to $1,450,000 and 2013 to 2017 $1,300,000 to $1,900,000; 2018 and newer systems rarely circulate refurbished and are quoted per unit. Equipment-only listings read lower because they leave out delivery, rigging, installation and the warranty.
How much does a new 3T MRI cost?
A new 3T MRI costs $2,100,000 to $3,700,000, the new 3T band of our MRI machine cost guide, an estimate of current list pricing for the MAGNETOM Vida, Signa Premier and Elition classes printed for comparison. Medical Outfitters does not sell GE, Siemens or Philips systems new; new 3T systems are sourced on request and quoted per project.
What is the cheapest 3T MRI machine?
A refurbished GE Signa HDxt 3T or Siemens MAGNETOM Verio at $1,000,000 to $1,300,000 delivered, installed and warrantied: the 60 cm HDxt through MO Select and the 70 cm Verio sourced on request. Both are discontinued platforms at the bottom of the 3T band, so the support horizon is the question to settle before the price.
What is the Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra price?
A Siemens Skyra price is $1,000,000 to $1,600,000 refurbished through MO Select, delivered, installed and warrantied: $1,000,000 to $1,300,000 for a Tim 4G [204 x 48] system with XQ gradients and the standard coil set, and $1,200,000 to $1,600,000 for a [204 x 64] or [204 x 128] system with an expanded coil set and later software. Siemens' current 3T is the MAGNETOM Vida, so the Skyra is bought refurbished.
What is the GE Discovery MR750w price?
A GE Discovery MR750w price is $1,100,000 to $1,750,000 refurbished through MO Select, delivered, installed and warrantied: $1,100,000 to $1,450,000 with standard coils and earlier DV software, and $1,300,000 to $1,750,000 for a GEM system with the expanded coil set, later software and advanced applications.
What is the Philips Ingenia 3T price?
A Philips Ingenia 3T price is $1,100,000 to $1,900,000 sourced refurbished on request, delivered, installed and warrantied by Medical Outfitters: $1,100,000 to $1,600,000 with Omega HP gradients and the standard coil set, and $1,400,000 to $1,900,000 with advanced packages, a later release and Elition-class configuration. Medical Outfitters is not a Philips dealer; we source, install and service Philips systems.
What is the Siemens Verio price?
A Siemens Verio price is $1,000,000 to $1,300,000 sourced refurbished on request, delivered, installed and warrantied. The Verio is the 70 cm 3T the Skyra replaced; it is the lowest-priced wide-bore 3T on the used market and a discontinued platform, so support and software level decide whether a given unit is a good buy.
What does a 3T MRI need in the room?
An RF-shielded enclosure sized for the system, magnetic shielding where the 5-gauss line would cross a corridor or the floor above, a quench vent, a chiller, a floor that takes a 6 to 8 metric ton magnet and a route in for it. A 3T magnet stores about four times the energy of a 1.5T and throws a larger fringe field, so the room is the premium on top of the purchase premium. The manufacturer's site planning drawing for the specific system decides the dimensions.
Does a 3T MRI use more helium?
Helium behaviour is a property of the magnet, not the field strength. The Siemens Skyra and the Philips Ingenia run zero boil-off magnets, so the cold head is the service item; the GE HD-era magnets consume helium and need fills. On any 3T the cryogen volume at ramp-up is larger than at 1.5T, and a quench is more expensive to recover from, which is why the cold head hours and the helium level on the day of survey are checked before a quote.
How much does a 3T MRI cost to run?
A service contract priced per year as a percentage of system value, the cold head on a replacement interval, cryogens where the magnet consumes them, the chiller, and the coil set, which on a 3T is the component most worth covering. The percentage is the same logic as at 1.5T applied to a larger number; our MRI service page explains how a contract is priced and what full coverage includes.
Who should buy a 3T MRI?
Hospitals, academic centers and specialist outpatient groups whose referrals are neuro, musculoskeletal, prostate or research imaging, where the extra signal earns its premium. For a general outpatient mix a wide-bore 1.5T usually earns more per dollar, and 3T is the second magnet that takes the detail work; patients with implants labelled for 1.5T only need a 1.5T route in either case.
