A refurbished Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra costs $1,000,000 to $1,600,000 in 2026, delivered, installed and warrantied. It is the 3T counterpart of the Aera: the same 70 cm bore, Tim 4G coils and Dot workflow with twice the field strength, XQ gradients as standard and up to 128 receive channels. New 3T systems run $2,100,000 to $3,700,000 in our MRI cost guide; Siemens’ current 3T is the MAGNETOM Vida, so the Skyra is bought refurbished.

This guide covers what the Skyra is, the channel configurations it was built in, our 2026 range, what moves a Skyra quote, what to check before you buy, what 3T siting adds, who it suits against the Aera and the GE Discovery MR750w, and how to buy one through MO Select. Specifications are Siemens’ published figures, checked 28 September 2026.

Overview

What Is the Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra?

The Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra is a 3 Tesla wide bore MRI scanner introduced alongside the 1.5T Aera at the start of the 2010s. It has a 70 cm bore, a 163 cm magnet inside a 173 cm system, and it runs the Tim 4G coil architecture and the Dot workflow. It was Siemens’ volume 3T for most of the decade and the platform many hospitals and research centres bought their first 3T on.

Tim 4G on the Skyra was sold as [204 x 48], [204 x 64] and [204 x 128]: 204 coil elements combined across 48, 64 or 128 receive channels. XQ gradients, 45 mT/m at 200 T/m/s, are standard, and the transmit side uses Siemens’ TimTX TrueForm design to even out the RF field, which is the main image-quality problem 3T introduces in body imaging. The magnet is a zero helium boil-off design.

Two later names matter on the used market. MAGNETOM Skyra fit is the version delivered as an upgrade into an existing Siemens 3T room, and Skyra eco is the Siemens-refurbished offering. Siemens’ current 70 cm 3T is the MAGNETOM Vida, so the Skyra is now a refurbished purchase with a large installed base behind it.

Price Drivers

What Moves the Price of a MAGNETOM Skyra

Two quotes for the same MAGNETOM Skyra can differ by a whole configuration. These are the lines that move the price, roughly in order of impact.

  • Channel count [204 x 128] systems carry the premium; [204 x 48] systems anchor the bottom of the band
  • Coil set 3T coils are expensive; a complete set is a six-figure line on its own
  • Software level E11 and later releases add sequences and Dot engines and raise the price
  • Cold head and helium history Documented service on the cold head and a stable helium level are worth paying for
  • Siting A 3T room needs the fringe-field, shielding and vibration work done properly; reusing a 3T room keeps the installed price down
  • Warranty and service term Our range includes the MO Select warranty; a 3T service contract is the largest running cost after staff
Buying Checklist

What to Check Before You Buy a Used MAGNETOM Skyra

A used MAGNETOM Skyra is bought on its records. These are the checks our engineers run and the questions to put to any seller before you sign.

  • Channel count and software: Confirm [204 x 48], [204 x 64] or [204 x 128] from the system data and the syngo MR release with the licensed sequences and Dot engines in writing.
  • Coil complement: List and test every coil. 3T coils cost far more than 1.5T coils, so a missing Head/Neck 64 or Body 30 changes the price materially.
  • Helium level and cold head: Zero boil-off design; a falling level means a cold head or compressor issue. Ask for the log and the last reading.
  • Gradient coil and amplifiers: XQ gradients work hard on a 3T. Ask what has been replaced, and for any gradient coil fault history.
  • Quench and ramp history: A planned ramp-down for transport is normal; an unplanned quench needs an explanation.
  • 3T siting: The 5 gauss line, the RF shielding at 123 MHz, the floor loading and vibration all differ from 1.5T. Have the room surveyed before the magnet is bought, not after.
  • Chiller and power: 3T systems draw more power and reject more heat; confirm the chiller capacity and the electrical supply match the specification.
Fit

Who the MAGNETOM Skyra Suits, and the Alternatives

The Skyra suits sites whose case mix rewards 3T signal and who want a wide bore for patient access.

  • Neuro, musculoskeletal and prostate imaging programs that need thin slices and high resolution
  • Hospitals and academic centres running advanced sequences, spectroscopy and functional studies
  • Sites replacing an early 3T that want the Tim 4G coil ecosystem and Dot workflow
  • Buyers who want a 3T with the deepest installed base and parts market

Alternatives to the MAGNETOM Skyra

ModelWhy you would choose it instead
Siemens MAGNETOM AeraThe 1.5T sibling on the same platform, for routine case loads at $350,000 to $600,000 less
GE Discovery MR750wGE’s 70 cm 3T, for sites in the GE ecosystem
Philips Ingenia 3.0TPhilips’ 70 cm 3T with digital coils, common on the used market
GE Signa HDxt 3TA 60 cm 3T from the previous generation for less, where bore size is not the issue
How to Buy

How to Buy a MAGNETOM Skyra

  1. Send the room, the power supply and the case mix. Room dimensions, the existing RF shielding and chiller, the electrical supply and the exams you run decide the configuration before the model does.
  2. Choose the configuration. Field strength, channel count, gradients, coil list and software level, matched to the case mix rather than to the largest set.
  3. Get the configuration in writing. Every coil by name, the software release, the licensed applications, the helium and cold head history and the warranty term, so quotes compare line by line.
  4. Survey the site. RF room, fringe field, chiller capacity, power and rigging route, before the magnet is bought.
  5. Schedule the de-installation and rigging. Ramp-down, transport and installation are in our price; the schedule is agreed with your facilities team.
  6. Agree the warranty and service term. The MO Select warranty is written; a service contract for the years after it is quoted alongside.
  7. Applications training and go-live. Protocol set-up and technologist training on site.

We quote within one business day and deliver, install, train and support across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean through an ISO 13485:2016 certified quality system. Request a MAGNETOM Skyra quote » Current availability is on the MO Select MAGNETOM Skyra product page.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra cost?
A refurbished MAGNETOM Skyra costs $1,000,000 to $1,600,000 in 2026 delivered, installed and warrantied. A [204 x 48] system with a standard coil set sits at $1,000,000 to $1,300,000; a [204 x 64] or [204 x 128] system with an expanded coil set and later software runs $1,200,000 to $1,600,000. New 3T systems run $2,100,000 to $3,700,000.
What is the difference between the Skyra and the Aera?
Field strength: the Skyra is 3T and the Aera is 1.5T. They share the 70 cm bore, the Tim 4G coil architecture and the Dot workflow. The Skyra has XQ gradients as standard and up to 128 channels; it costs more, needs stricter siting and gives more signal for thin-slice neuro and musculoskeletal imaging.
What is the difference between the Skyra and the Vida?
The MAGNETOM Vida is Siemens’ current 70 cm 3T, introduced in 2017 with the BioMatrix technology and newer gradients and software. The Skyra is the previous generation, bought refurbished at well under half the price of a new Vida.
Is a 3T MRI worth it over a 1.5T?
For neuro, musculoskeletal, prostate and research work, the extra signal pays for itself in resolution and speed. For routine outpatient imaging a 1.5T does the job at a lower purchase price, lower service cost and easier siting. The answer follows the case mix, not the specification sheet.
What room does a MAGNETOM Skyra need?
A 3T room is engineered for a larger fringe field, RF shielding at 123 MHz, higher floor loading and vibration control. Sites replacing an existing 3T usually reuse the room after a survey; a first 3T is a construction project, and our MRI cost guide covers what it adds.
What does Skyra fit mean?
Skyra fit was Siemens’ name for the Skyra delivered as an upgrade into an existing Siemens 3T installation, reusing parts of the site. On the used market it is a Skyra; confirm what was reused and what was new.
Does Medical Outfitters sell the Siemens MAGNETOM Skyra?
Yes. We supply the Skyra refurbished through MO Select, fully tested against the manufacturer specification, delivered, installed by our own rigging and engineering team and covered by a written warranty, across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The product page carries the quote form.
