How Much Does a Used MRI Machine Cost?

What moves the number inside a band: the coil set that ships with the unit, which software packages are licensed and transfer, the magnet history and helium boil-off rate, bore size, and whether the manufacturer still supports the platform. Ask for the used MRI equipment price with the coils you actually need included, because a bare system and a working configuration are different numbers. Used, Refurbished or OEM Certified?
Used means sold as inspected and described, for buyers with their own service arrangement and the appetite for a cold head or a coil repair in year one. Refurbished, in our usage, means MO Select: stripped, renewed, tested to specification and warrantied by the people who will service it. OEM certified means the manufacturer itself refurbished the system and stands behind it, usually at a price closer to new. All three are legitimate purchases for the right buyer; the mistake is paying a refurbished price for an as-is unit. What to Check Before You Buy a Used MRI
- Magnet history Whether it has ever quenched or been ramped down, the current helium level and boil-off rate, and cold head hours. A quench is a scenario a used buyer must understand before signing
- Coil inventory The exact coils that ship with the unit, tested, not the list from the brochure
- Software Which packages are licensed on this unit, which transfer to a new owner, and the software level relative to the platform’s last release
- Platform support Whether the manufacturer still supplies parts and supports the software, which matters more than the year of manufacture; see how long an MRI machine lasts
- Service history Who maintained it, how often, and what was replaced
- The room RF shielded enclosure, magnetic fringe field, floor loading, chiller and quench vent, assessed before the system is ordered, not after it arrives
- The route in Crane, wall opening or rigging path, and who owns that plan

Delivery, Installation and Moving a Used MRI
A used MRI is bought twice: once as a machine and once as a project. When a Used MRI Makes Sense, and When New Does
A refurbished 1.5T is the right answer for most outpatient centers, for a second or third scanner, and for any site whose case mix is general imaging on a proven platform. New makes sense when the latest software generation is the point, when a long factory warranty is a board requirement, or when the site needs a capability that only the current generation offers. A refurbished 3T often beats a new 1.5T for a neuro or musculoskeletal practice on capability per dollar.
